During the IoT seminar in March 2020, eSite took up conversations about remote working possibilities with new industrial VR and IoT solutions. Sadly, the timing was very relevant and today concrete solutions are implemented to give staff the chance to visit plants remotely and provide remote support to plant operations and maintenance.

The theme of the IoT seminar in Tampere was information security and environment, and during both seminar days eSite presented ideas and solutions around Industrial VR.

During the workshop “10 X IoT digital twin” hosted by Head of eSite Miko Olkkonen, conversation turned quickly to remote working opportunities enabled by Industrial VR and IoT.

“For example, our reality capture and the immediate “street view” of the plant are proven ways to give technical experts and support staff the possibility to visit their plant remotely and give remote support for operators and maintenance field workers”, Miko Olkkonen says.

Fast and effective solutions

New Industrial VR solutions reduce the need to travel which saves the environment, but also help keeping production plants operating even during moments when traveling is not possible.

Speed of implementation and related cots is naturally a key question when considering taking new ways of remote support into use at operating plants.

“In addition to us being able to implement new Industrial VR and IoT solutions at an operating plant extremely fast, the costs for the implementation is nominal – less than the cost of an expert support team visiting the site to solve one problem”, Olkkonen explains.

“It is like somebody from your organization just visiting the site to take reference pictures. Two of our experts come to the site and walk through the areas to be captured for remote support. Minimum preparation or effort is needed from the plant staff. After this, support can be provided from remote locations. By allowing two people visit the site once, you can reduce dramatically the need for others to visit the site. This contributes to operational excellence and safety and helps keep critical production ongoing during today’s challenging times.”
